artificial intelligence in education

Artificial intelligence may still be in its infancy, but it has created enough buzz in commercial segments. In fact, it is not only restricted to commercial sectors, but has touched several aspects of our daily lives. Automatic parking features in cars, intelligent camera sensors, personal assistance in smartphones are some of the common examples of AI.

Although self-aware robots, as depicted in sci-fi movies, have not been created yet, smart use of AI has been made across various segments. One area where AI is expected to make transformative changes is education. This is not being said in the context with humanoid teachers, but other segments where artificial intelligence can help teachers as well as students to get more out of the educational system.

Here are some of ways AI is expected to transform the current education system:

  1. Individualized learning

Whether in kindergarten or primary or senior secondary, each student is different. Their pace of learning as well as learning capacities are different. What artificial intelligence can do here is that it can facilitate individualized learning. IA enabled adaptive learning software and programs can consider individual needs of the student, emphasize on certain topics and repeat topics which are difficult to comprehend. Custom education system will put a major impact on the learning of students.

  1. Automation in education

Education system is not only about teaching and learning, but also involves tedious tasks of grading homework, assignments and exams. Grading consumes a significant amount of teachers’ time which they can use to interact with students or teaching them.

AI is getting pretty close to human methods of grading and automate the process for multiple choice questions and similar testing methodologies. Current artificial intelligence technology is working around grading essays. Once in existence, it will allow teachers to spend more time with students.

  1. Additional help in learning

AI teachers can help students with difficult subjects like mathematics. Besides, these programs can also help with writing and improve weak areas.

However, it can’t teach students high-order thinking and creativity. These areas will still require the help of a real-world teacher.

  1. Integrated technology for finding and interacting with information

Though rarely noticed, but AI is everywhere – for instance a common example is of Google’s search results based on a user’s location and preferences. Similarly, this artificial intelligence system can transform how students can search and interact with information in schools.

  1. Trial-and-error learning methodology

Trial-and-error theory of learning is not uncommon. However, failure intimidates students and for many of them not knowing the answer is simply frightening. Students are more worried about how they will be portrayed in front of their peers and teachers if they don’t know any answer. All these problems would come to an end when learning in an AI enabled environment which is judgment free. In addition, AI tutors can provide effective ways of improvement.

  1. Transform the role of teachers

While the role of teachers in education system is inevitable, Artificial intelligence technology can bring some transformation in their role. AI can manage grading, help students in learning and can also improve other aspects of teaching. It can also change the way students search for information.

Also, AI technology, systems and software can enable students to learn from anywhere, anytime. AI enabled education programs are already helping students to learn basic skills, but as their scope will improve, it will offer much wider scope to students.
